Engineered wood flooring
The typical construction of a 14mm engineered wood floor consists of three layers, each serving a specific purpose. The top layer is composed of solid wood, providing the authentic look and feel of hardwood. Beneath the top layer lies a core layer made up of strips of wood, offering stability and durability. The bottom layer is a single-piece stabilizing base layer, which further enhances the structural integrity of the flooring. Engineered wood floors are available in various formats, ranging from 10mm to 16mm in thickness, with top layers typically measuring between 2.5mm and 4mm of hardwood. The boards are designed with tongue and groove joints, featuring micro bevels along the long sides only. These types of engineered wood floors can be installed using different methods, including nailing (for 20mm thickness only), gluing down, or floating, providing flexibility in installation based on specific requirements and preferences. Furthermore, engineered wood floors are well-suited for use over underfloor heating systems, with a locking system being recommended for this application. This recommendation reflects the compatibility and efficiency of engineered wood floors when paired with underfloor heating, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.Solid wooden flooring
Solid wooden flooring is a single piece of hardwood or softwood top to bottom. The boards are tongued and grooved all round and will have micro bevels on the long sides if they are supplied pre finished. Otherwise they will be square edged boards which will need to be sanded and finished on site. The best way to fit a solid wooden flooring is by secret nailing and according to British Standards by surface fixing if the boards are over 130mm wide. Nailing should always be the preferred method of fixing but when necessary you could also glue down a solid hardwood floor. Solid floors cannot be floated as there is too much movement in a solid floor and the machining of the tongue and groove does not support this type of installation.Wood Flooring Grades

When thoughtfully integrated, rustic grade flooring adds a touch of individuality and richness to upscale interiors. It creates an environment that is both unique and inviting, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a visually stunning space that reflects their style and personality.Underfloor Heating
Fitting engineered flooring over a wet underfloor heating system requires careful consideration to ensure the flooring performs well and the heating system remains effective. Here are some guidelines to consider:
Select the Right Flooring
Choose an engineered wood flooring product that is specifically designed for use over underfloor heating. Look for flooring with a
stable construction and suitable thermal conductivity.
Acclimatisation
Acclimate the engineered wood flooring to the environment in which it will be installed. This helps the flooring adjust to the
temperature and humidity levels of the space, reducing the risk of expansion or contraction after installation.
Maintain Recommended Temperature
Operate the underfloor heating system within the recommended temperature range for the engineered wood flooring. Excessive heat
can damage the flooring, while insufficient heat may lead to gaps or cupping.
Subfloor Preparation
Operate the underfloor heating system within the recommended temperature range for the engineered wood flooring. Excessive heat
can damage the flooring, while insufficient heat may lead to gaps or cupping.
Underlayment
Install an appropriate underlayment designed for use with underfloor heating systems. The underlayment should provide thermal
insulation, sound absorption, and moisture protection.
Use specialized products like Bona Freshen Up or Bona Polish Gloss to revive scratched and dull surfaces, providing a newly finished
look and continuing protection against wear.
Follow Manufacturer Guidelines
Always follow the installation guidelines provided by the manufacturer of the engineered wood flooring. These guidelines are specific
to the product and will ensure a successful installation over the underfloor heating system. Use specialized products like Bona
Freshen Up or Bona Polish Gloss to revive scratched and dull surfaces, providing a newly finished look and continuing protection
against wear.
Expansion Gaps
Leave expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room to accommodate any potential movement of the wood flooring. The gaps
should be covered by baseboards or moulding once the installation is complete.
Installation Method
Consider using a floating installation method for the engineered wood flooring. This method allows the flooring to expand and
contract with changes in temperature without being restricted by adhesive.
Temperature Control
Gradually increase the temperature of the underfloor heating system over several days after the flooring installation. Sudden
temperature changes can cause the wood to expand or contract too quickly.
Professional Installation
Consider hiring a professional flooring installer with experience in working with underfloor heating systems. They can ensure that the
flooring is installed correctly and in a manner that is compatible with the heating system
Hand finish
The touch of the human hand embodies an unrivalled level of skill and artistry in our distinctive techniques for hand-applying and manipulating finishes on wooden flooring. With almost two decades of dedicated refinement, we have cultivated a profound reservoir of knowledge and expertise in this timeless craft. We ardently believe that machine-produced finishes pale in comparison to the depth and quality achieved through our meticulous hand-finishing process. By methodically layering stains and wax oils, we craft finishes that exude opulence and sophistication while accentuating the innate grain of the wood.
Crafting our floors is a labour of love, demanding an intricacy that eludes machine replication or on-site emulation due to the sheer complexity of our finishes. Our process typically commences with the fastidious brushing and sanding of the boards, with certain boards left unbrushed in accordance with the desired finish.
Between each application, the boards are delicately hand-sanded prior to the successive coats. The quantity of coats applied is contingent upon the nature of the finish, with more elaborate finishes necessitating extended drying times, particularly our two-tone finishes.
Each individual board is imbued with character through hand-staining and wax oiling, followed by careful placement into racks to undergo the drying process. Upon completion, they are fastidiously removed, sanded anew, and bestowed with another coat of wax oil before being tenderly returned to the racks for further drying.
